State museum of nature and Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky’s memory “Schelykovo” is located in Ostrovsky area of Kostroma region, in the former mansion of the playwright. Ostrovsky’s plays still comprise the main part of the national repertoire of Russian theatres. The museum preserves the true atmosphere where the playwright used to live and work.
The father of the writer bought that place in 1847. Later, A. N. Ostrovsky spent 20 seasons in his beloved mansion. We can observe Schelykovo motives in more than 20 plays by Ostrovsky: Yarilina valley, the Blue spring where Snegurochka’s heart melted, the characters of plays “The Forest”, “Wolves and Sheep”, “The Last Victim” – everything reminds us of Schelykovo.
Here, surrounded by wonderful landscape, the memorial estate, the literature and theatre museum is located. The museum object – the peasant house of I. V. Sobolyev, Ostrovsky’s friend – is located in the village of Nicolo-Berezhki. Tourists are welcome to visit Nicholas the Wonderworker church and the family cemetery where A. N. Ostrovsky and his relatives are buried.
The Art Center of the Union of Theatre Workers of Russia is located on the territory of the museum. It is a favourite resting place for many actors, writers and artists. The museum organizes annual scientific conferences, devoted to Ostrovsky’s creative work.
